Morocco imports record volume of almonds from USA

Morocco has continued to increase its imports of shelled almonds from the USA, according to EastFruit. In the first 11 months of 2024, the country imported over 35,000 tons of these nuts, valued at $174.5 million. This represents an 18% increase compared to 2023 and sets a new record.

Since 2017, Morocco has consistently increased its imports of shelled almonds from the USA, with the exception of 2022. That year, a slowdown in global economic growth, rising logistics costs, and other economic challenges led to a slight reduction in imports. However, growth resumed in 2023, and the 2024 import volume was 38 times higher than that of 2017.

Almond imports to Morocco occur year-round, though there is a decrease in volumes during the local harvest season (September-October).

The USA remains the primary supplier of shelled almonds to Morocco, accounting for nearly 99% of total imports in the first 11 months of 2024. Smaller quantities were also imported from Spain, Portugal, Algeria, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Morocco ranks 8th among the USA’s almond export destinations, with a 5% share. In 2024, the USA, as the world’s leading exporter, supplied shelled almonds to 112 countries.

Nut consumption in Morocco is on the rise, with almonds being the most popular among Moroccan consumers. Consequently, the annual import value of almonds is second only to dates among fruit and vegetable products. As of the first 11 months of 2024, Morocco is among the top 10 global importers of shelled almonds.

In addition to imports, Morocco has developed its own almond production and even exports small quantities. In 2024, 215 tons of shelled almonds were exported to Denmark, Italy, and Germany. According to FAOStat, Morocco’s domestic almond production (in shell) reached 146,000 tons in 2023.
