According to EastFruit analysts, consumers in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan enjoy record low prices for popular citrus fruits as if this was some kind of a compensation for the record high prices for grapes due to abnormal frosts in January 2023.
In particular, prices for mandarins in Uzbekistan, thanks to the Pakistan’s expansion, have reached all-time lows and are the lowest among all countries in the region. The situation with oranges is absolutely identical – prices in Uzbekistan are record low for this period of the year and the lowest of all countries in the region. This is further confirmation that the policy of eliminating import duties on fruits that are not grown in the country is absolutely correct and helps to increase the local population’s access to healthy fresh fruits.
Also in Tajikistan, wholesale and retail prices for oranges and Mandarins are at levels close to record lows in recent years, although they are higher than in Uzbekistan. This is due to smaller market size, more expensive logistics and higher payments for access to the Tajikistan’s market.
Our colleagues visited local supermarkets to show the range, quality, and prices in retail.
Minimum retail prices for mandarins in chain supermarkets in the capital of Uzbekistan as of December 13, 2023:
Macro Supermarket – 11,990 sum/kg, $0.97 (Pakistan)
Korzinka Supermarket – 12,990 sum/kg, $1.05 (Pakistan)
Baraka Supermarket – 9,900 sum/kg, $0.80 (Pakistan).
The next highest price level is mandarin from Turkey, which sells for from 17,000 to 20,000 sum/kg (from $1.38 to $1.62), then there are the so-called “mini-Mandarins” (the origin of which is not specified) which go for 20,000 to 28 000 sum/kg (from $1.62 to $2.27).
Oranges in supermarket chains in Uzbekistan are mainly sold from 17,990 to 32,990 sum/kg ($1.5-2.7).
Persimmon in the Korzina store was offered of two types: so called “Simple” at a price of 28,000 sum/kg ($2.27) and a so called “Romashka” (aka chamomile) persimmon – 30,000 sum/kg ($2.43).
In Tajikistan, consumers also have a choice in price and quality of citrus fruits and persimmons. In particular, mandarins, also mostly from Pakistan, are sold for 10.95-25.50 som/kg ($1.0-2.3).
Prices for oranges in supermarkets in Tajikistan range from 32 to 40 soms per kg ($2.9-3.7).
There are two types of persimmons – the so-called “simple” persimmon and a so called “chocolate” persimmon. The “Simple” one has an astringent taste, while the “chocolate” one has no astringency. Persimmon is a local traditional fruit and is now coming from local fruit storages. Therefore, prices for it are also much more affordable – only 6.2 som/kg or about 57 US cents
