This week, wholesale prices for carrots in Ukraine have started to decline, according to analysts from the EastFruit project. Producers report they are increasingly compelled to sort through their existing stock of root vegetables, with rejection rates significantly higher compared to the same period last year. This issue is particularly critical for farmers whose storage facilities are not adequately equipped.
According to the weekly monitoring report, since the beginning of this week, carrot prices on the Ukrainian market have decreased by an average of 10%. Today, producers offer these root vegetables for sale at 23-30 UAH/kg ($0.54-0.71/kg), depending on quality and batch size. Notably, producers are forced to make such price adjustments even with a limited supply of high-quality carrots on the market.
Producers note that prices are pressured by very restrained demand for medium and low-quality vegetables. Wholesale companies and retail chains are willing to purchase these root vegetables only in small batches, citing extremely low retail sales rates as their reason.
Producers attribute the quality issues of vegetables this season to unfavorable weather conditions during the growing and harvest periods. Starting from the second summer month of 2024, Ukraine experienced hot and dry weather, hindering the normal development of crops. Last autumn, due to heavy rains during harvest, farmers had to store products with high moisture content.
