Egypt is significantly expanding its presence in the Italian garlic market, aiming to become one of the top three exporters. According to EastFruit, Egypt continued to increase its garlic exports to Italy in 2024. By the end of the year, Egyptian exporters had shipped 1.66 thousand tons of garlic to Italy, valued at over $3 million. This marks an 84% increase from the previous year and 2.5 times more than in 2022. Moreover, this figure is the highest since 2003, when exports reached 3.5 thousand tons.
Traditionally, the export period for Egyptian garlic to Italy lasted from March to July, peaking in March and April. However, last year, exports extended until November. A similar pattern was observed in 2024, with the export season starting in February and lasting until October, with peaks in March, May, and July. In the structure of Egypt’s garlic exports, shipments to Italy account for about 8%, second only to sales to Taiwan, Poland, and Russia.

The key suppliers of garlic to the Italian market are Spain and the Netherlands, providing over 60% and 10% of the exports, respectively. Egypt, Slovenia, Greece, France, and since 2023, Argentina, compete for the remaining market share. Over the past two years, Egypt has been actively strengthening its position. In 2022, Egypt’s share of total garlic imports to Italy was less than 3%, rising to 3.7% in 2023, and exceeding 6% in the first eleven months of 2024. It is highly likely that by the end of the year, Egypt will be among the top three garlic exporters to Italy, surpassing Slovenia and Argentina.
