Banana imports fall in Uzbekistan, Ecuador remains top supplier

Uzbekistan’s banana imports dropped by 5% in 2023, reaching 133.5 thousand tons, compared to 140.2 thousand tons in 2022.

Ecuador continued to be the main source of bananas for Uzbekistan in 2022-2023.

The Statistics Agency of the Republic of Uzbekistan reported that the country spent $95.1 million on importing about 133.5 thousand tons of bananas from overseas in 2023.

According to Kun.uz, the previous year’s figure was – 140.2 thousand tons, worth $63.4 million.

The top five countries that supplied bananas to Uzbekistan in 2023 were:

  • Ecuador – 130 thousand tons;
  • China – 1043 tons;
  • Georgia – 976 tons;
  • Turkey – 746 tons;
  • Kazakhstan – 375 tons.

Uzbekistan extended the zero import customs duty on some food products until January 1, 2025. This means that bananas, citrus fruits and other fruits can be imported without any tariff for another year. The aim of this decision is to maintain stable prices in the local market and control inflation.
