AI has forecasted the apple and pear harvest in Switzerland – the volume will be higher than last year

In Switzerland, the 1st apples and pears of the season have been harvested. The harvest will peak in mid-September and last until the end of October, Fructidor notes.

According to Fruit-Union Suisse’s harvest forecasts, the 2024 apple crop should reach 103,589 tonnes (+3% on 2023) and the 2024 pear crop should reach 16,364 tonnes (+17% on 2023). Fruit size and quality are considered excellent.

Apples: Gala, with 29% of total volume, remains in the lead, ahead of Golden Delicious with 14% and Braeburn with 11%.

Pears: the Beurré Bosc variety, with 34% of total volume, leads the way, ahead of Conference with 25%, Louise Bonne with 11% and Williams with 11%.

This year’s crop forecasts were established for the 1st time using an AI-supported application. The 2024 harvest year was calculated using the new PreApPear application, developed by Prognosix in collaboration with the Swiss Fruit Union (FUS) and SWISSCOFEL. The application enables harvest potential to be estimated by variety and by plot.
