Trial operation phase starts for Chinese research and breeding facility

The Crop Breeding Accelerator Construction Project, a research-type multi-store glass greenhouse, located in Beijing, commenced in July 2024 and reached completion in September 2024. The facility is now in its trial operation phase. The Crop Breeding Accelerator project undertaken by Kingpeng is capable of supporting the breeding of a variety of crops, including tomatoes, wheat, rice, corn, soybeans, mung beans, and lettuce, HortiDaily writes.

This project covers 1400 square meters of lighted growth rooms and 9200 square meters of glass greenhouse propagation rooms. The project is called the Breeding Accelerator, as it creates the necessary environmental conditions for plant growth, including ventilation, temperature, light, water, oxygen, etc.

“We emulate natural phenomena and innovate where nature falls short”, remarked the project lead. “This greenhouse environment allows plants to engage in full photosynthesis. For instance, regarding light exposure, the highest artificial light exposure duration for wheat in China is 22 hours per day. In contrast, during the northern winter, natural sunlight provides only 8 hours of exposure daily; thus, 22 hours of artificial light of the greenhouse equates to approximately three days of natural sunlight.”

Infrared lights

More than 50% of sunlight is infrared light, which only generates heat and doesn’t support plant photosynthesis. “In the breeding accelerator project, we use dynamic lighting to select the exact light spectrum plants need for photosynthesis, boosting their growth rate and quality for high-quality breeding.”

The crop cultivation area features advanced systems like energy screens, side insulation, air circulation, cooling, humidification, top windows, adjustable grow lights, and drip irrigation, creating ideal growth conditions for crops.

In the crop seedling growing area, there are complete system and equipment facilities such as tidal seedbed irrigation system and environmental monitoring and control system, which ensure the healthy growth of crop seedlings.

The tomato growing area is equipped with high-standard environmental control, a planting system, a light filling system and an intelligent digital system. “The light filling lamp is a 5-channel adjustable light source, which can achieve accurate and independent regulation of dynamic light environment for crop growth throughout the cycle”, the team shows.

It is well-suited for the iterative selection of breeding materials, rapid enhancement of individual traits in developed varieties, and swift integration of biological breeding traits. “Looking ahead, we will continue to advocate for intelligent, sustainable, and digital advancements in agriculture, striving to become a world-class integrated solutions provider for modern agricultural facilities!”
