Heavy snowfall delays exports of Georgian mandarins to Russia

On January 11, 2020, the Georgian Roads Department published information on the closure of the Gudauri-Kobi section of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi international transit road between Russia and Georgia due to heavy snowfall and an increased risk level for an avalanche.

In an interview with EastFruit, exporters said that heavy snowfall and road delays are expected in January so they always try to prepare in advance. They take into account the risks in negotiations with buyers and warn that the cargo may be several days late. For example, a delay of several days for mandarins is not critical. However, when a large volume of products accumulates at the border and then the road is reopened, a large amount of products immediately hits the export market, which threatens to collapse prices and presents significant losses for entrepreneurs.

EastFruit previously reported that the export volume of Georgian mandarins as of December 27, 2020, amounted to 30,600 tons, which is 13% more than a year ago. In monetary terms, exports amounted to $14.8 million, which is 7% more than a year earlier.
