Ukrainian producers managed to increase watermelon prices this week, according to analysts of the EastFruit project. Market participants attribute this situation to a significant reduction in the supply of watermelons from local farms.

According to the project’s daily monitoring data, watermelon prices in Ukrainian farms increased by an average of 20% over the past week alone. Today, growers are ready to ship this produce at UAH 5-12/kg ($0.11-0.27/kg), depending on quality and production region. Farmers explain the price increase in this segment by an imbalance between supply and demand.

Following the end of the marketing season for mid-season varieties, watermelon supply dropped sharply, as many Ukrainian growers faced yield problems with late-season varieties this year. Meanwhile, demand for the product has continued to grow rapidly over the past two weeks.
It should be noted that, despite the significant price increase in the melon segment, watermelons in Ukraine are still sold at prices that are on average 27% lower than during the same period last year.
