Since the middle of last week, Ukraine has seen another wave of declining wholesale prices for onions, according to analysts from the EastFruit project. Many farmers expected prices for this vegetable to start rising at the beginning of spring, as a significant volume of substandard products would leave the market. However, at the moment prices in this segment continue to decline, while onion supply on the market remains more than sufficient.

As of today, Ukrainian producers are offering onions at 3–8 UAH/kg ($0.07–0.18/kg), which is on average 19% cheaper than at the beginning of the previous working week. Farmers complain that they are forced to lower prices because the market is still dominated by medium- and low-quality onions. This situation is due to the fact that with warmer weather, farms began actively selling onions from storage, as product quality is deteriorating rapidly. At the same time, trading activity in the segment remains quite low, which also puts pressure on prices.
It is worth noting that onion prices in Ukraine are currently, on average, 49% lower than during the same period last year. More detailed information about the onion market and other fruit and vegetable products in Ukraine can be found on the EastFruit website.
