What makes greenhouse cucumber prices go up in Ukraine?

Ukrainian greenhouses have increased prices for cucumber this week, EastFruit project analysts report . According to industry experts, several factors contribute to the increase in the cost of the cucumbers on the Ukrainian market. First of all, the reduction in the supply of cucumber on the market contributes to the price increase. At the same time, the demand in this segment is quite high, and these products are in demand not only on the fresh market, but also by processing enterprises.

According to the project’s daily monitoring data , at the moment greenhouse cucumbers in large batches are already on sale at 18-30 UAH/kg ($0.49-0.82/kg), which is on average 20% more expensive than at the end of the last working week .

According to industry experts, Ukrainian growers manage to raise cucumber prices primarily due to a very limited supply. Open field cucumber offer is rather small due to the heat. At the same time, the supply of greenhouse products is also small, since greenhouses have so far started selling cucumbers from the second cycle.

Thus, at the moment, greenhouse cucumbers in Ukraine already cost an average of 2 times more than in the same period last year. Moreover, market players are confident that prices will rise further, given the increased demand of wholesale companies and retail chains for these products. At the same time, it has not yet been possible to compensate for the shortage of local products with imported cucumbers.
