Improved weather conditions across most of Ukraine have enabled watermelon producers to resume active harvesting, leading to a notable increase in market supply, according to analysts from the EastFruit project. Farmers note that the price situation is further aggravated by the dominance of large-calibre watermelons on the market — a size category for which demand is weak. Wholesale buyers and retail chains are minimising purchases of such fruit, citing very slow sales in retail outlets.
At present, prices for watermelons have fallen to 5–15 UAH/kg ($0.12–0.36/kg), averaging 31% lower than at the end of last week. Producers attribute the downward trend to a sharp rise in supply. Hot weather has significantly accelerated ripening in the fields, while drought conditions in the southern regions have negatively affected fruit quality, adding pressure on prices.

It is worth noting that, despite the recent decline, current watermelon prices in Ukraine remain on average 78% higher than in mid-August 2024. However, industry experts do not foresee a significant improvement in the market in the near term. They point out that price increases are only possible for top-quality fruit, which is in limited supply. Meanwhile, prices for watermelons weighing over 5 kg are expected to continue falling, as farmers seek to speed up sales and clear available volumes as quickly as possible.
