A sustained downward trend in wholesale prices for cucumbers in Uzbekistan since late March is typical for this time of year. However, during the current season—from the end of March through early May—prices have fallen to their lowest levels for this period in several years, EastFruit analysts report.
According to Asanalı Jenbayev, representative for Rijk Zwaan’s protected-cropping division in Uzbekistan, the sharp increase in greenhouse cucumber supply this year is driven by two key factors. “First, following widespread outbreaks of tomato brown rugose fruit virus (ToBRFV) in greenhouse operations during 2023–2024, many growers affected by the virus switched to cucumbers for the spring 2025 season to mitigate risk. Second, new high-yielding greenhouse cucumber hybrids have become available on the Uzbek market. These hybrids deliver 20–30% higher yields compared to those previously cultivated in Uzbekistan, further encouraging producers to adopt cucumber cultivation,” he explained.
As a result of these combined factors, greenhouse cucumber production volumes have risen significantly, leading to a surge in domestic supply and, consequently, a sharp drop in prices, EastFruit analysts conclude.
