Ukrainian farmers are trying to sell off their potato stocks and are lowering prices

Extremely low demand for potatoes in Ukraine is forcing producers to reduce wholesale prices, analysts of the EastFruit project report. According to experts, the main factor driving potato prices down is the significant increase in low-quality products on the market. Specialists note that farmers have begun actively selling potatoes from storage, as their quality has started to deteriorate rapidly with the onset of relatively warm weather.

At the moment, potatoes in Ukraine are offered for 6–13 UAH/kg ($0.14–0.30/kg), which is on average 20% cheaper than at the end of the previous workweek. Many Ukrainian farmers report substantial stocks of potatoes still in storage. At the same time, trading activity in this segment remains fairly low. As a result, in order to stimulate demand and sell off stocks before the start of fieldwork, farmers are lowering prices for this product.

It is worth noting that as of today, potatoes in Ukraine are already 61% cheaper on average than they were a year earlier. Moreover, project analysts do not rule out that the downward price trend in this segment may accelerate significantly by the end of the current month.
