Ukraine: prices for strawberries continue to fall

In Ukraine, strawberries are falling in price again, according to analysts of the APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits project. Producers are forced to reduce prices in this segment because of the rapid deterioration of quality due to weather conditions.

The average wholesale prices for strawberries in Ukraine did not fall below 25-65 UAH/kg ($ 0.93-2.41/kg) last week, but this week they began to decline rapidly in the southern and central regions of the country. In particular, strawberry producers are now offering strawberries at a price of 20-50 UAH/kg ($ 0.74-1.86/kg), which is on average 21% cheaper than a week earlier.

At the same time, the majority of market operators note a fairly large percentage of substandard berries in the current season. Abundant rainfall noticeably reduced the quality characteristics of strawberries and the shelf life is rather limited. In the current situation, the majority of producers decided to reduce the prices for strawberries in order to accelerate the sales.

To date, the price of strawberries in Ukraine is already 35% lower on average than in the same period last year. At the same time, key market players do not exclude a further reduction of the prices. They explain this by the fact that the supply of strawberries on the market continues to grow, but the quality of the offered strawberries leaves much to be desired.
