The Egyptian garlic season kicks off

The new Egyptian garlic season has just begun, with production volumes expected to be high, as typically seen every two seasons—unlike last year’s lower yield, FreshPlaza informs.

Mohamed Shaaban, CEO of Garlico, says: “We started the 2025 season on February 20 with shipments of wet green garlic to Europe, and will start loading 80% dry garlic by April 10, followed by 100% dry garlic by April 25. The season will then run until October.”

“The area planted with garlic this season is much larger than last year. I’d even say it’s almost doubled. Last year, supply was so low that even the local Egyptian market suffered, and prices were very expensive,” Shaaban adds.

According to the grower, weather conditions in Egypt have been favorable for garlic: “We haven’t had any fog or heavy rain. I expect the quality to be better this season. Half of the production is made up of large sizes, ideal for the retail market, and the other half of small sizes, suitable for other outlets and processing use.”

Egypt is benefiting from a window of little to no competition, according to Shaaban. He explains: “Everyone has been waiting for the start of the Egyptian season. Spain has limited volumes and very expensive prices. Argentina is in its last few weeks of exports. China is subject to high taxes in destination ports like Brazil and the U.S.”

“Our prices are slightly lower than last season due to increased production. Demand is strong, but we are making sure that prices remain decent and the buyers and us,” Shaaban concludes.
