Taste, Texture, Tenacity: What Makes Moroccan Avocados Special?

Morocco’s avocado story reads like a horticultural fairy tale: in just a few years, a quiet corner of North Africa has blossomed into one of the world’s most exciting new sources of this buttery, green gold. For produce buyers and importers hunting for standout fruit, Moroccan avocados offer a bouquet of benefits—exceptional flavor, rock-star shelf life and a harvest season that fills the gap when other origins run dry.

Although avocados have been cultivated in Morocco for more than two decades, production has surged spectacularly in recent years. The country’s first commercial orchards appeared around Rabat in the 1950s, and Eurostat data show Morocco began exporting avocados in 2008. Today, its unique blend of Mediterranean coastal climate—hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters—and cooler, temperate mountain zones creates perfect growing conditions for richly flavored fruit.

From Humble Beginnings to Export Powerhouse

The export volumes of avocados from Morocco continue to grow, according to EastFruit. Back in 2010, Moroccan farmers harvested barely 9,500 t of avocado . Fast-forward to 2023/24, and they’ve shipped a record 56,700 t—up 25 % in a single year—earning USD 179 million on the global market . With new orchards sprouting at 200–300 ha annually, that momentum shows no sign of slowing.
