Swiss taste for Moroccan avocados hits new heights

Moroccan avocado exports to Switzerland have reached unprecedented levels in marketing year (MY) 2024/25, propelling Morocco to second place among the country’s top suppliers. According to EastFruit, while early data had already signaled strong growth, final figures exceeded expectations.

Morocco exported 3,800 metric tons of avocados to Switzerland between July 2024 and June 2025, valued at $12.2 million. This marks a 2.7-fold increase compared to MY 2023/24 and a fourfold jump from MY 2021/22. Notably, this volume sets a new national export record, and for the first time, revenue from avocado shipments to Switzerland surpassed $10 million.

Switzerland is not a new market for Moroccan avocados. The first officially recorded shipment dates back to MY 2003/04, totaling just 704 kg. Export volumes crossed the 100-ton mark in MY 2011/12 and exceeded 500 tons for the first time in MY 2019/20.

In MY 2024/25, Switzerland accounted for 1.4% of Morocco’s total avocado exports – its highest share to date, having never exceeded 1% in previous years. The country is now considered one of the most promising growth markets for Moroccan avocados.

Over the past two marketing years, Moroccan avocado exports to Switzerland have typically occurred between September and May. Peak volumes were recorded in November and February, with MY 2024/25 seeing a high of 862 tons exported in February alone. During that month, Moroccan avocados captured nearly 40% of the Swiss market share.

Swiss demand for avocados continues to rise. In MY 2024/25, the country imported 24,300 tons of avocados, up 14% from the previous year and 29% from MY 2021/22.

Peru remains the leading supplier, consistently accounting for over 40% of Swiss avocado imports in recent years. Spain, Israel, and Chile were also among the top exporters prior to MY 2024/25. Until now, Morocco had not ranked higher than fifth.

That changed dramatically this year. Morocco’s surge in export volume not only set a new record but also allowed it to overtake key competitors and secure the #2 spot. Moroccan avocados now represent over 15% of Switzerland’s total avocado imports, reinforcing the country’s position as a strategic and fast-growing market for Moroccan producers.

In addition to Switzerland, Morocco is actively diversifying its avocado export portfolio, having shipped over 1,000 tons to Canada during MY 2024/25.
