Strawberry prices keep falling in Uzbekistan

A week ago, EastFruit wrote about the collapse in prices for strawberries in Uzbekistan –  their wholesale prices fell 4.5 times in just a week, which was an unprecedented decline in such a short period. However, the downward trend continued last week, and wholesale prices for strawberries fell by another quarter during this period.

According to EastFruit price monitoring, from 22 to 29 April 2022, the average wholesale prices for strawberries in Uzbekistan decreased from 20 000 to 15 000 UZS/kg ($1.77 to $1.34), i.e. another 25% in one week. If we consider the dynamics of wholesale prices since the beginning of April, then the average wholesale prices have fallen from the maximum value recorded on April 8, 2022 at the level of 110 000 UZS/kg ($ 9.68) by 7.3 times over the past 3 weeks!

As of April 22, 2022, the average wholesale prices are 2.3 times lower than on the same date in 2021, but 25% higher than on the same date in 2020. However, in absolute terms and taking into account two years of inflation, current prices are roughly in line with the levels of the same period in 2019.

It should be noted that the current wholesale prices for strawberries in Uzbekistan are among the lowest in the countries of the region, where EastFruit monitors wholesale prices for fruits and vegetables. Prices are lower only in Tajikistan. For example, as of April 29, 2022, the average wholesale prices in these countries were the following (in US dollars per 1 kg): in Ukraine – 5.13; Moldova – 2.97; Poland – 2.35; Georgia – 1.96; Uzbekistan – 1.34; Tajikistan – 0.96.
