Spain Controls Two-Thirds of the EU Eggplant Market

Spain continues to strengthen its position in the European Union eggplant market, with the province of Almería playing a key role in the growth of supplies, reports EastFruit, citing FruitVeb.

In January-June 2026, EU countries imported 145,680 tonnes of fresh and chilled eggplants worth a total of €241.76 million. The average import price was €1.66 per kg.

Spanish companies supplied 95,570 tonnes of eggplants to the EU market, accounting for 65.6% of total EU purchases. Of this volume, 81,990 tonnes, or around 86% of Spain’s exports, came from Almería.

As a result, Almería alone supplied more than half of all eggplants entering the EU market in the first half of the year.

The Netherlands was the second-largest supplier, with 28,390 tonnes and a 19.49% market share. Germany ranked third with 6,450 tonnes (4.43%), while Turkey supplied 4,040 tonnes, accounting for 2.77% of the market.

The Hortoinfo analysis is based on Euroestacom (ICEX–Eurostat) and Estacom (ICEX–Tax Agency) statistics for TARIC code 070930, covering fresh or chilled eggplants.

Spain maintains its dominant position in the EU market, while the Netherlands remains the second-largest supplier. Germany retains a significant share, while Turkey is gradually increasing its presence in the European market.
