Prices for cabbage started increasing in Ukraine

The growth of  prices resumed on the market of cabbage in Ukraine this week, analysts of the EastFruit project report. Market participants attribute the jump in prices to the beginning of the off-season period: medium varieties of cabbage are gradually leaving the market, and farmers plan to start harvesting late varieties in the last week of August.

Currently, prices for high-quality cabbage rose to 22-27 UAH/kg ($0.60-0.74/kg) this week, which is 10% higher on average than last week.

The main reason for the price growth in the segment was the end of the sales season for cabbage of mid-season varieties. At the same time, growers did not resort to a more rapid increase in prices, fearing that it could cause slower sales of cabbage.

As of today, cabbage in Ukraine already costs 6 times more on average than in the same period last year. However, according to producers, it is most likely not worth hoping for a price reduction in early autumn. A slight decline is only possible at the beginning of the harvesting campaign, then the price will only increase. The fact is that today market participants are concerned about the prospects for the cabbage harvest. Due to heat and drought, the gross harvest can significantly decrease. Also, it should be noted that the area planted with cabbage has significantly decreased in the current season.
