Onion Prices Rise in Ukraine

Starting from the beginning of this week, wholesale prices for onions have been increasing in Ukraine’s domestic market, according to analysts of the EastFruit project. Farmers report that part of the onion crop still remains unharvested in the fields, while its quality is gradually deteriorating. Moreover, onions left in the ground have begun to sprout, which will further negatively affect product quality.

As of today, local producers are offering onions at UAH 7–13/kg ($0.17–0.31/kg), which is on average 12% higher than at the end of last week.

Experts attribute this price increase mainly to the fact that many farms have been forced to suspend onion harvesting due to unfavorable weather conditions, resulting in a significant reduction in market supply. Analysts also note that most farmers prefer to store high-quality onions for future sales, currently offering only limited quantities to the market.

At the same time, despite the upward price trend, current onion prices in Ukraine remain on average 21% lower than during the same period last year.
