Onion Prices in Ukraine Continue to Decline

According to daily monitoring data from the EastFruit project, onion prices in Ukraine have been falling for the second consecutive week. Producers report a noticeable weakening of demand for this product, while supply on the market continues to grow.

As of today, farmers are offering onions for sale in the range of 5–10 UAH/kg ($0.12–0.24/kg), depending on quality and batch size, which is on average 20% cheaper than at the end of last week. It should be noted that current onion prices in Ukraine remain the lowest in at least the past four seasons!

Experts of the project attribute the strengthening of negative price trends in this segment to the growing supply of medium- and low-quality products. Due to prolonged rains during harvesting, the quality of the vegetables was seriously affected, making them unsuitable for long-term storage. In an attempt to sell such onions quickly, most farmers are currently continuing to lower their asking prices for available volumes. Meanwhile, high-quality onions are rarely offered on the market, as producers prefer to keep them in storage, waiting for higher prices.

It is worth noting that, as of today, onions in Ukraine are already being sold on average 40% cheaper than during the same period last year. For more detailed information on the development of the onion market and other fruit and vegetable products in Ukraine, visit the EastFruit website.
