After a slight easing last week, farm-gate prices for onions on the Ukrainian market have begun to climb once more, analysts at EastFruit report. Market participants attribute this increase to a marked reduction in supply as seasonal stocks of onions in Ukrainian farms become depleted. At the same time, trading activity in the onion market has picked up slightly, further supporting higher prices.
Currently, farmers are offering onions at UAH 18–27 per kilogram (USD 0.43–0.65/kg), on average 13% above levels at the end of last week. However, they admit that raising prices more aggressively has been challenging, as buyers are increasingly unhappy with the quality of the onions on offer.

Notably, today’s onion prices in Ukraine are on average 26% higher than in the first ten days of May last year. Producers remain uncertain about their ability to continue passing on higher costs, since the quality of stored onions is deteriorating rapidly.
