Onion Prices Begin to Rise in Ukraine

For the first time this year, Ukrainian producers have managed to significantly increase their selling prices for yellow onions, according to analysts from the EastFruit project. Market players attribute this development to the seasonal depletion of onion stocks in local farms and the growing purchasing activity from wholesale buyers.

According to EastFruit’s daily market monitoring, as of today, Ukrainian farmers are offering yellow onions at no less than 14–20 UAH/kg ($0.34–$0.49/kg), which is on average 55% higher than at the end of last week.

Despite the price increase, demand for onions continues to grow daily amid a sharp shortage of high-quality supply. Most farms have already sold out their available stocks, while those with remaining volumes have halted sales, further fueling panic buying and accelerating price growth.

It is worth noting that as of now, onion prices in Ukraine are on average 59% higher than during the same period last year. According to market participants, this upward trend is expected to continue until the new season’s harvest reaches the market in volume.
