Morocco has begun to restore its watermelon exports after a sharp decline in 2024, according to EastFruit. In the first 11 months of 2025, the country exported 175,000 tons of watermelons worth $190 million, an increase of 54% compared to 2024.

Morocco’s export record was set in 2022, when the country shipped 297,000 tons abroad. However, subsequent years brought severe climate challenges. Prolonged droughts and acute water shortages forced restrictions, and in some regions outright bans, on watermelon cultivation. As a result, 2024 saw the lowest export volume in eight years, and Morocco dropped out of the world’s top ten exporters.
In 2025, the industry began to rebound, allowing exports to grow once again. While volumes remain far below past records, the recovery offers hope. Watermelon has re-entered Morocco’s top five fruit and berry export categories, helping the country regain its position among leading global suppliers.
Morocco has also managed to restore exports of potatoes and mandarins, further strengthening its agricultural trade outlook.
