Morocco sets record for banana imports

Morocco continues to increase its banana imports, according to EastFruit. By the end of 2024, the country had imported over 36,000 tons of bananas, which is 28.8% more than the previous year and twice as much as in 2022. This figure also sets a record for the observation period, with the cost of imports exceeding $18 million.

Until 2023, Morocco primarily imported bananas directly from Ecuador and Costa Rica. However, over the past two years, the share of these countries in the import structure has decreased due to a significant rise in supplies from Spain and Portugal. Both Spain and Portugal are among the largest banana producers in the EU and grow the same varieties found in Morocco.

The local banana season in Morocco lasts from October to June, with the peak of imports occurring from July to October, when local produce is scarce. According to FAOSTAT, banana production in Morocco in 2023 amounted to 309,000 tons, which is 7.5% less than in 2022. The decrease in production was primarily due to a reduction in cultivated areas. Consequently, this deficit in local produce was covered by imports from Spain and Portugal.

Morocco also exports bananas, albeit in small volumes, and this has been decreasing in recent years. For instance, in 2024, the country exported only 250 tons of bananas, compared to 280 tons in 2023 and 460 tons in 2022.
