Morocco sets new sweet pepper export record for fifth consecutive marketing year

Morocco continues to expand sweet pepper exports, setting new records for the fifth consecutive marketing year, reports EastFruit.

In MY 2024/25 (October–September), overseas shipments of sweet peppers reached 189.2 thousand tons, generating USD 240 million in export revenue. This represents a new record, 3.7% higher than the previous benchmark set in MY 2023/24.

The country has now achieved record sweet pepper exports five years in a row, with average annual growth in export volumes reaching 13% over this period.

Sweet peppers are among Morocco’s leading vegetable export products, second only to tomatoes in terms of volume. Exports are carried out year-round, beginning in October with early varieties and peaking between December and April. In MY 2024/25, the highest monthly shipments were recorded in January (25 thousand tons) and March (23 thousand tons). From June onward, exports decline sharply as high temperatures negatively affect both quality and volumes, with September typically marking the lowest monthly shipments.

Morocco’s sweet pepper exports are primarily directed to European markets. Spain, France, Germany, and the Netherlands accounted for 82% of total exports in MY 2024/25. Around 7% of shipments went to West African countries—Mauritania and Senegal. The UK has emerged as a fast-growing market, with exports increasing fifteen-fold over the past five years.

Export diversification also continues. Secondary destinations accounted for nearly 5% of exports in MY 2024/25, compared with 3.5% in the previous year. The geographic reach of exports is expanding as well: volumes exceeding 100 tons were shipped to 19 countries in MY 2024/25, up from 15 countries a year earlier.

It should also be noted that Morocco set a new marketing year record for tomato exports despite ongoing challenges.
