In Uzbekistan Prices for Last Year’s Onions Are Rising Amid the Arrival of New Harvest Batches

Large wholesale batches of the new onion harvest have appeared on the wholesale markets of Uzbekistan’s capital, offered at the same price as last year. However, this has coincided with a sharp increase in wholesale prices for last year’s onions, according to EastFruit experts.

According to EastFruit’s price monitoring data, as of April 11, 2025, the average wholesale price for new crop onions was 5,000 UZS/kg ($0.39). At the same time, between April 4 and April 11, the average wholesale price for onions from the previous harvest increased by 50%, rising from 2,000 to 3,000 UZS/kg (from $0.15 to $0.23).

Interestingly, during the same period in 2024, the emergence of the first wholesale batches of new crop onions actually led to a price decrease for last year’s onions. In the first ten days of April 2024, the average wholesale price for the previous harvest dropped by a quarter — from 2,000 to 1,500 UZS/kg (from $0.16 to $0.12). Although this decrease was short-lived and prices quickly rebounded to 2,000 UZS/kg ($0.16), there was no further price growth for last year’s onions thereafter.

Whether the current price surge for last year’s onions will be short-lived remains to be seen. However, this already indicates that this season’s onion price trends may differ from the typical pricing patterns observed for early vegetables, as previously noted by EastFruit analysts.
