In Russia, prices for cabbage went up

The price of cabbage in Russia began to grow rapidly this week, analysts of the EastFruit project report. According to market participants, white cabbage is one of the most demanded vegetables of the “borsch set” on the Russian market now. At the same time, the supply is rather limited, since many growers prefer not to rush into sales – they do not exclude that selling prices in this segment may increase even more in the coming weeks.

Selling prices for white cabbage have grown by an average of 16% since the beginning of this week and today their range is 24-34 RUB/kg ($0.33-0.46/kg).

The reason for the increase in prices, according to market participants, is the rather limited supply of cabbage. Large farms prefer to store the bulk of the crop in storage facilities and ship only surplus and cabbage unsuitable for storage to the markets. Wholesale companies and retail chains are very interested in purchasing cabbage and are ready to raise purchase prices in this segment.

It should be noted that the price of white cabbage in the Russian Federation is already 2.7 times higher on average today than in the same period in 2020, and most market participants expect its further rise in price. They argue their opinion by a decrease in the production of white cabbage in the country, while the share of products suitable for long-term storage has also noticeably decreased.
