Georgia increased apple exports 12-fold in 2020/21

Georgia exported 5,045 tons of apples from the beginning of August to 23 November 2020, which is a 12-fold increase from one year ago, states the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia.

According to the ministry, 96.8% of all export deliveries (4,884 tons) were made to Russia. Export markets for Georgian apples also include Kazakhstan, Armenia, Singapore, and Hong Kong (China). The volume of apple exports in monetary terms amounted to $2.2 million, which is a 7-fold increase compared to the same period last year.

Mass harvesting of apples in Georgia began in the first ten days of September and the harvest of early varieties occurred about a month earlier. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this year the country is expected to have a record harvest of apples at the level of 120,000 tons. In comparison, the 2017 apple harvest amounted to 20,000 tons, 83,000 tons in 2018, and 44,000 tons in 2019. The Shida Kartli region is the main supplier of Georgian apples to the market.

In today’s agricultural markets of Georgia, the minimum cost of apples depending on variety and quality ranges from 0.5 lari ($0.20) to a maximum of 3.0 lari ($0.90).
