The Egyptian garlic campaign is progressing at a satisfactory pace for exporters, thanks to strong demand and much higher volumes than last season, resulting in a greater abundance of large, high-quality garlic, FreshPlaza informs. This is happening at a time when the competition is experiencing production problems, giving Egyptian exporters leverage on European markets.
According to Farag Karem, CEO of Al Wadi for Agricultural Investments and Export, European demand for Egyptian garlic is strong this season, including from Spain, Egypt’s direct competitor given the seasonality of the two origins. Karem adds: “Spanish importers are buying large quantities of Egyptian garlic for redistribution in Europe. This is an invitation for European importers to buy directly from Egypt and benefit from much lower prices. Despite strong demand, our prices remain absolutely competitive.”
The exporter adds that he is particularly interested in the Dutch market: “It’s a market that absorbs large quantities. Although Dutch buyers prefer green garlic, which is fast running out in Egypt now, I think Egyptian dry garlic programs can be interesting for the Dutch market. We have a large supply of red and purple garlic in 5 to 7 cm sizes that are appreciated by Dutch consumers, with a campaign that continues until August.”

“We specialize in the Dutch market and have gained a great deal of experience and knowledge in its needs. We have the advantage of growing our own supply, and want to take the commercial opportunities brought by this season to further expand our exports to the Netherlands,” Karem adds.
Despite high demand, Egyptian garlic prices remain competitive, according to the exporter. “Compared to last season, and also compared to the Spanish competition, for example, our prices are very convincing. As an indication, a ton of dry garlic from Egypt is currently around USD 1,000,” he concludes.
