Egypt surges ahead in Brazil’s off-season orange market

Egyptian orange exports to Brazil have hit a new seasonal high, signaling a major shift in global citrus trade dynamics. According to EastFruit, shipments from Egypt exceeded 30,000 tons between November 2024 and July 2025, generating $20 million in export revenue, a record-breaking performance.

Egypt first entered the Brazilian market in 2020. Since then, export volumes have skyrocketed by 400 times, with an average annual growth rate of 232% over five seasons. This rapid expansion has propelled Brazil into the top ten destinations for Egyptian oranges, now rivaling Malaysia in shipment volumes.

Despite being the world’s largest orange producer, Brazil channels nearly two-thirds of its harvest into juice production, where it also leads globally. However, growing demand for fresh oranges during the off-season has created a supply gap, one increasingly filled by imports. For the second consecutive year, Brazil’s orange imports have exceeded 40,000 tons, with Egypt emerging as the dominant supplier.

Brazil’s domestic harvest runs from May to November, during which local supply and limited imports from Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile meet market needs. But from December to April, the country turns to the Northern Hemisphere to bridge the seasonal shortfall. While Spain previously held the lead, Egypt has now taken center stage.

In MY 2020/21, Spain accounted for over 50% of Brazil’s orange imports, while Egypt supplied just 15%. By MY 2023/24, the roles had reversed. This trend has continued into the current season, with Egypt trailing Spain only during the early months of November–December.

Egypt’s momentum isn’t limited to Brazil. The country has also set new records in Argentina, further strengthening its footprint in South America’s fresh citrus market.
