Egypt strengthens pumpkin exports to Italy for the third consecutive year

Egypt has continued to expand its pumpkin exports to Italy, setting a new record for the third year in a row, according to EastFruit.

Between January and August 2025, Egyptian exporters shipped more than 8,000 tons of pumpkins to Italy, valued at nearly USD 5 million. This volume is three times higher than in 2023 and four times greater than in 2022. It also surpasses the previous record set in 2024 by 73%. Overall, Egypt’s average annual growth rate in pumpkin exports to Italy over the past three years has reached 62%.

Italy is currently the sixth most important destination for Egyptian pumpkins, accounting for just over 6% of total export sales in the past two years. Shipments typically occur from January to June, aligning with Italy’s peak import season. The highest volumes are delivered in late winter and early spring. In 2025, February and March saw the largest shipments, with Egyptian pumpkins making up more than half of Italy’s imports during those months.

Although Italy ranks among the world’s top ten pumpkin producers, the country has been steadily increasing imports in recent years. Rising consumer demand combined with lower domestic production due to climate challenges has fueled this trend. In 2024, Italy imported a record 18,000 tons of pumpkins. In the first eight months of 2025 alone, imports already reached 17,000 tons, making another record highly likely.

Egypt has firmly established itself as Italy’s leading supplier. Its market share has grown from 14% in 2022 to 26% in 2024, and in the first eight months of 2025 Egypt accounted for 46% of Italy’s pumpkin imports. Other key suppliers this year include South Africa, France, Spain, and the Netherlands. In total, Italy sourced pumpkins from 24 countries during the January-August period.

Egypt has also achieved notable success in fresh grape exports, tripling shipments to Italy in 2025.
