Egypt strengthens position in Brazil’s garlic market

Egypt has significantly expanded its footprint in Brazil’s garlic sector, more than doubling exports in 2025, according to EastFruit. Brazil imported 3,900 tons of Egyptian garlic last year, valued at over USD 6.8 million. This represents a 2.4-fold increase compared to 2024 and exceeds the combined volumes of the previous two years by 20%.

Although domestic production has grown, Brazil continues to rely heavily on imports to meet demand, consistently ranking among the world’s top five garlic importers. Traditionally, Argentina has dominated the market, supplying over 70% of Brazil’s imports, particularly between December and May when local stocks are depleted.

However, in 2025 economic pressures—including high inflation and declining consumer purchasing power—shifted demand toward more affordable suppliers. Brazilian buyers increasingly favored budget-friendly imports over premium local or Argentine garlic. As a result, Argentina’s share of imports dropped to 55%, while China expanded its presence to 42%, driven by competitive pricing and strong demand in retail and food processing.

Egyptian exporters also capitalized on this trend. Shipments peaked in June and July, coinciding with reduced Argentine supply and the delayed arrival of local harvests. Egypt’s share of Brazil’s garlic imports exceeded 12% in June and closed the year at 2.5%.

Brazil remains a relatively new market for Egypt. The first official exports were recorded in 2016 at just 26.5 tons. Since 2019, shipments have become regular, with a record set in 2020 when Brazil imported more than 7,000 tons. While 2025 volumes fell slightly short of that peak, Egypt is well positioned to surpass its previous record in the near term.

In parallel, Egypt has also achieved remarkable growth in the U.S. market, increasing garlic exports sixfold.
