Egypt reclaims position in Jordan’s banana market with record exports in 2025

Egypt has re-established itself as a major supplier of bananas to Jordan, achieving record export volumes in 2025, according to EastFruit. Last year, Jordan imported 5,250 tons of Egyptian bananas, valued at USD 3.4 million. This represents an 8.5-fold increase over 2024 and exceeds the combined shipments of the previous four years, surpassing Egypt’s previous record set in 2020.

Jordan’s banana market is shaped by both import dependence and policies aimed at protecting local farmers. The Ministry of Agriculture frequently applies licensing systems, quotas, and temporary import bans during domestic harvests. In 2023, stricter licensing and phytosanitary requirements effectively halted Egyptian imports. Shipments resumed in 2024 under new bilateral agreements but remained modest.

In 2025, Egypt fully returned to the market, securing second place among Jordan’s suppliers with an 11.6% share. Ecuador maintained its dominant position with 84.5%, while Lebanon ranked third at 2.7%.

Egypt’s resurgence underscores its evolution from a producer focused on domestic consumption to a competitive exporter leveraging geographic proximity and trade agreements to penetrate regional markets.

This achievement complements Egypt’s broader expansion in the Middle East. In 2025, Saudi Arabia also imported record volumes of Egyptian watermelons, further highlighting the country’s growing role in regional fruit trade.
