Egypt doubles frozen strawberry exports to the EU in the past five years

Egypt has demonstrated the stunning pace of development in the frozen strawberry export in the past five years, as reported by EastFruit. The EU countries were the most important export destination for Egyptian frozen strawberries, and Egypt has doubled its exports to the EU since 2018.

In 2018, Morocco was the leading exporter of frozen strawberries to the EU, with Egyptian exports being slightly lower: 62,000 tonnes against 60,000 tonnes. Nevertheless, a year later, Egypt became the leader and never lost that status until now, while Moroccan frozen strawberry exports to the EU went down.

In 2022, Egypt accounted for about two thirds of the EU’s total imports of frozen strawberries from non-EU countries. Morocco accounted for another third, and, thus, cumulative share of other supplying countries was lower than a percent!

Furthermore, in addition to Morocco, many other countries were also squeezed from the EU market in 2018-2022. Turkish frozen strawberry exports to the EU fell by 20% to 8,000 tonnes, Chinese exports went down by 91% to just 820 tonnes, and Peru exported just 100 tonnes of frozen strawberries to the EU in 2022.

Besides Egypt, there were only two countries that managed to raise their exports to the EU, but their volumes were quite lower that Egyptian ones: Serbia increased its exports by about a half to 6,700 tonnes, and Ukrainian exports went up by 23% to 4,500 tonnes.

The EU is the biggest market for frozen strawberries in the world. For example, in 2022, the USA imported just 178,000 tonnes of frozen strawberries, while the EU imports totaled 207,000 tonnes just from non-EU countries. The EU imports continue to grow despite increasing domestic production of frozen strawberries. For example, Poland itself annually exports from 70,000 tonnes to 100,000 tonnes of frozen strawberries.

Nevertheless, such volumes are not enough to satisfy the demand, and imports from non-EU countries have grown by a third since 2018. The list of key importers includes Germany, the Netherlands and Poland, with their cumulative share of about 60% in the EU’s total imports of frozen strawberries from non-EU countries.
