Egypt achieves record garlic exports to Azerbaijan

Egypt has set a new benchmark in garlic exports to Azerbaijan, delivering a record 115 metric tons between July 2024 and April 2025, according to EastFruit. This volume is nearly triple that of the previous season and marks the highest level ever recorded. The total export value reached $149,000.

While Azerbaijan accounts for less than 2% of Egypt’s overall garlic export portfolio this season, such emerging markets play a strategic role in diversifying Egypt’s export destinations and mitigating risk.

Egypt first entered the Azerbaijani garlic market in the 2019/20 season. After a brief hiatus in 2020/21, exports resumed and have steadily grown. This season, Egypt capitalized on favorable market conditions to surpass the 100-ton milestone.

Historically, Iran and China dominated Azerbaijan’s garlic imports. In 2021/22 and 2022/23, Iran captured nearly 90% of the market, overtaking China. However, Iranian exports have declined sharply since last season, reaching a new low in the current one. At the same time, strengthened political and economic ties between Azerbaijan and China have led to increased trade, positioning China as the leading garlic supplier this season.

During periods of reduced Chinese supply, countries such as Egypt, the UAE, and Kazakhstan stepped in to meet demand, boosting their export volumes. As a result, Egypt now ranks among the top three garlic suppliers to Azerbaijan.

Egypt’s performance underscores its ability to respond swiftly to market shifts and expand its footprint in non-traditional destinations. The country is also strengthening its presence in Italy’s garlic market and preparing to enter the U.S. market.
