Current export rate of Georgian apple exceeded $1M

The volume of apple exports from Georgia for the period from September to October 18, 2020, amounted to $ 1,098 thousand.

According to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, the current export volume is 4.7 times higher than a year ago.

During this period, 2 thousand 514 tons of Georgian apples were exported, which is almost seven times more than a year earlier. Besides, 2 thousand 432 tons or 97% of the total volume were supplied to Russia. Kazakhstan ranks second among the export markets for Georgian apples with a figure of 75 tons or 3%. Small batches of apples were also sent to Armenia, Singapore, and Hong Kong (China).

Harvesting of apples in Georgia began in the first decade of September. A record harvest of apples at the level of 120 thousand tons is expected in the country this year. In comparison, the apple harvest in 2017 amounted to 20 thousand tons, in 2018 – 83 thousand tons, in 2019 – 44 thousand tons. The leading supplier of Georgian apples to the market is the Shida Kartli region.

Within the framework of the “Unified Agricultural Project”, the state supports the modernisation of traditional and arrangement of modern orchards in the country. In particular, with the support of the Plant the Future project, which has been implemented since 2015 (part of the United Agricultural Project), 1 thousand 128 hectares of intensive and semi-intensive apple orchards were laid in Georgia.
