China sets record with frozen strawberry imports from Egypt

China has sharply increased imports of frozen strawberries from Egypt, setting a new record in trade between the two countries, according to EastFruit.

In the first 11 months of this year, China purchased 54.4 thousand tons of frozen strawberries from Egypt, worth more than 84 million US dollars. This volume is already 60% higher than the total imports from Egypt last year.

Although China is the world’s largest producer of fresh strawberries, only about 10% of its crop is processed. The country is both a major exporter and importer of frozen strawberries, with exports slightly exceeding imports.

Domestic consumption of frozen strawberries in China continues to grow, driven by the expansion of the food industry. At times, demand for frozen berries outpaces local supply, prompting Chinese factories to rely on imports to maintain year-round production when domestic raw materials are insufficient or more expensive.

Egypt supplies frozen strawberries to China throughout the year, with peak shipments from May to July, complementing China’s own season from November to June. Competitive pricing makes Egypt the leading supplier of frozen strawberries to the Chinese market.

China also imports smaller volumes from Chile and Morocco, though shipments from these countries are declining.

Thanks to the surge in exports to China this year, the country has become Egypt’s second-largest market for frozen strawberries, behind only Germany. China’s share in Egypt’s overall frozen strawberry exports has now exceeded 10%.

Egypt has also significantly increased exports of frozen strawberries to Turkey.
