Weekly Market Review: Onion Supply Doubles, Prices Rise; First Cherries Appear on Local Markets

EastFruit team is pleased to share the key produce market trends in the region’s fruit and vegetable for the previous week based on the EastFruit Trade Platform activity.

Key Highlights:

  • Onion Surge: Sales of yellow onions doubled, making them the top-selling item. New harvests from Egypt and Turkey entered the market
  • Beet Sales Up: Table beet sales nearly doubled, primarily driven by sellers from Uzbekistan, Ukraine, and Poland
  • Cabbage & Carrot Decline: Supplies of white cabbage, carrots, and potatoes decreased
  • Early Potato in Moldova: Moldova’s retail sector saw the first imports of the 2025 potatoes
  • Peking Cabbage Returns: Peking cabbage re-entered the top sales, with increased offerings from Ukrainian and Kazakh participants
  • Kazakhstan Exports: Farmers from Kazakhstan’s Turkestan region began exporting early Peking cabbage
  • Radish & Cucumber Trends: Radish offerings decreased, while cucumber listings increased compared to the previous week
  • Sweet Peas in Ukraine: Farmers in Ukraine’s Odesa region offered sweet green peas (“Oscar”) at $20 per kg
  • Strawberry & Apple Dynamics: Strawberry supplies continued to grow, while apple offerings declined
  • Blueberries from Morocco: Listings for blueberries from Morocco appeared on the trade platform
  • Uzbekistan’s Green Apricots: Participants from Uzbekistan actively offered green apricots (dovcha)
  • First Cherries in Uzbekistan: The first cherries of the new harvest appeared in Uzbekistan’s local markets, sold at high prices without issues in sales

Market Activity: Participants from 11 countries engaged in the EastFruit Trade Platform, with a 15% increase in total listings. Ukraine and Iran led this growth, followed by increased activity from Uzbekistan, Egypt, and Poland. Moldova and Morocco resumed postings, while activity from Kazakhstan and North Macedonia declined

Country-Specific Price Trends:

  • Ukraine: Prices for “borscht set” vegetables rose, with table beet prices increasing by 20–25%, now double compared to last year. Onion prices began to rise, while cucumber prices fell due to accelerated local harvests. Sweet pepper and Peking cabbage prices also decreased.
  • Uzbekistan: New harvest onions entered wholesale markets at prices similar to last year, but prices for last year’s onions increased. Pear and banana prices also rose.
  • Egypt: Carrot prices decreased, while potato prices continued to rise. New price offers for onions and garlic appeared, with garlic prices reaching a maximum of $1.10 per kg. High lemon prices lasted only a week before dropping due to low sales.

Technological Segment: Activity in the EastFruit Fruittechnology group declined compared to the previous week. Fruit tree seedlings remained the most sold item, though the number of sellers decreased. Vegetable seedlings were offered less frequently, while listings for packaging materials increased. Technological materials included heat fans, drip tape, agrofiber, and greenhouse films. In Uzbekistan, photo separator services were promoted, and in Ukraine, drone-based plant protection services gained traction.
