Domination of Cherries, Apricots, and Early Vegetables – EastFruit Weekly Market Analysis

EastFruit presents its weekly review of trading activity in the fruit and vegetable sector, based on monitoring its own trade platforms on Telegram. This analysis covers the latest trends in demand and supply, price changes for key items across different countries, and updates on technological offerings within the industry for 19th week of 2025

Key Market Developments This Week:

  • Early beetroots emerge as leader by number of listings
  • Cherry and apricot lead in the fruit segment while listings of apples continue to drop
  • Onion prices rise in Ukraine amidst reduced availability while early vegetables become more affordable
  • Uzbekistan increases sales of new harvest garlic
  • Ukrainian traders boost sales of radish and Chinese cabbage
  • Orange prices in Egypt increase for the third consecutive week
  • Carrots and white cabbage see the highest demand

These and other trends in the region’s fruit and vegetable markets are covered in EastFruit’s weekly trading platform review.

Market Activity Analysis

Activity on the EastFruit Trade Platform has begun to increase seasonally, with enhanced sales from Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Poland. Listings from the Netherlands and Turkey have reappeared, while seller activity from Iran and Greece has slightly decreased. During the past week, participants from 13 countries have offered their products on our trading platform. The top five countries by number of listings remained unchanged from the previous week: Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Iran, Egypt, and Poland.

Table beets (beetroots) emerged as the leader in terms of listings this past week, with participants from Ukraine and Uzbekistan sharply increasing their offerings. Listings also came from Egypt, Poland, and Azerbaijan. Offerings primarily consisted of early produce from this year’s harvest, with minimal sales of last year’s beets. This is very unusual for the rather niche product to lead the trade offers. It could suggest a growing popularity of beetroots among consumers due to growing interest in healthy lifestyle.

Similarly, white cabbage and carrot listings increased due to new harvest products, while onion and potato offerings declined. Radish and Chinese cabbage were offered more frequently than the previous week, predominantly by Ukrainian traders.

Apple offerings continue to decline, causing this product to lose its leadership position in the fruit and berry segment of the trading platform. Apricots and cherries, whose mass exports has begun from Uzbekistan, have taken the lead in sales. The number of strawberry sellers has begun to increase again, with offerings appearing from Kyrgyzstan. Among products which did not make it into the top, relatively high sales of watermelon from Iran are noteworthy.

Demand Analysis

Carrots and white cabbage were in the highest demand among trading group participants over the past week. Users also actively purchased apples and strawberries. There was a request to purchase blueberries in Ukraine for subsequent exports to Europe.

Year-Over-Year Comparison

At the same week f 2024 white cabbage was the sales leader, with offerings—especially of new harvest—on the rise. Participants also frequently offered carrots. However, potato and table beet sales were much lower than today. Uzbekistan was increasing its apricot sales, but they had not yet reached the top sales list. Strawberry offerings equaled apple offerings, though berry prices in Ukraine were four times lower than today.

Weekly Price Analysis by Region

Ukraine Price Trends

In Ukraine, early vegetables are becoming more affordable. Last year’s potatoes and carrots are also selling at lower prices than the previous week. Meanwhile, onion prices have begun to rise amid a notable reduction in supply. Cool weather has affected cucumber harvests from local greenhouse complexes, resulting in price increases. Tomatoes and sweet peppers have also become more expensive. Radish prices continue to decline. Chinese cabbage has become more expensive, while cauliflower has become cheaper. In the herbs segment, prices for green onions, parsley, and lettuce have increased, while dill has become cheaper. The price range for asparagus has widened due to increased supply.

As apple supply diminishes, prices continue to rise, reaching 50 hryvnia (1.1 euro) per kilogram last week. Lemons are also selling at higher prices. Oranges have become cheaper, and the price range for kiwi has expanded.

Uzbekistan Price Trends

Fruit and vegetable prices in Uzbekistan remained at the previous week’s levels. The only exception was cucumbers, which saw a slight price increase.

Egypt Price Trends

Against the backdrop of reduced supply at the end of the season, exporters from Egypt have once again raised orange prices. Considering the rapid growth of orange processing capacities in Egypt, we should prepare for significantly higher prices for this product in the new season.

Technology and Equipment Market

Activity in the EastFruit Fruittechnology group continues to decline. The exception was listings for fruit and vegetable containers and packaging, which increased compared to the previous week. The number of seedling sellers decreased maximally. Vegetable growers had the opportunity to purchase carrot and bean seeds, as well as cabbage and tomato seedlings. Technological equipment and materials included vegetable packaging machines, irrigation system equipment, mulching film, greenhouse and tunnel film. Participants from Uzbekistan promoted turnkey greenhouse construction services. Meanwhile, BASF|Nunhems has released a new high-yielding mid-season red onion variety — NUN 6005.
