Cherries and apricots prevail, strawberry price collapses, melon season is gaining momentum – EastFruit Weekly Market Analysis

The fruit and vegetable markets across the EastFruit Trade Platform exhibited notable shifts during the week of May 19–25, 2025. White cabbage maintained its dominance, apricot offerings surged, and apple availability dwindled. This report provides a comprehensive overview of these developments, comparing them to the previous week’s trends.

Market Activity Overview

Active participants spanned 10 countries, with increased offerings from Ukraine, Uzbekistan, and Turkey. Conversely, activity declined from Egypt, Iran, Poland, and North Macedonia. The leading countries by the number of listings were Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Egypt, Iran, and Poland.

Fruit and Berry Market Highlights

Apricots and cherries dominated the fruit and berry segment, primarily offered by Uzbek sellers. Overall, prices for cherries in Eastern Europe are expected to be very high, and for apricots – even higher.  The sour cherry season has commenced in Uzbekistan, though listings are yet to appear on the platform. Seller numbers for strawberries decreased. Sales of melons and watermelons increased, with initial watermelon offerings from Greece and the start of exports from Uzbekistan.

Vegetable Market Highlights

White cabbage continued to be the top-selling product, with listings from six countries, predominantly Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Notably, only the current year’s harvest was offered, with no carryover stock from the previous year. Carrot listings increased, while onion offer decreased compared to the previous week. Tomatoes re-entered the list of frequently sold vegetables, with Ukrainian participants boosting sales. Seller numbers for cucumbers declined. Meanwhile, Russian greenhouse cucumbers continued to enter the Polish market in large volumes, raising concerns among regulatory bodies and agricultural associations.

Buyer Demand Trends

Buyers showed significant interest in potatoes and last year’s white cabbage. There was also notable demand for zucchini and strawberries. Ukrainian participants actively sought rhubarb suppliers.

Price Trends in Key Markets

Ukraine

Early potato prices began to decline, while last year’s stock saw price increases. Table beet prices rose for the second consecutive week, affecting both last year’s and the current year’s harvests. Prices for last year’s white cabbage increased again. Despite seasonal stock depletion, producers reduced onion prices. Tomato prices increased compared to the previous week. Chinese cabbage prices decreased, while cauliflower and broccoli prices rose. Prices for zucchini, radishes, and green asparagus declined. Prices for culinary herbs mostly increased. With the local season concluding, apple prices began to rise. A sharp increase in strawberry supply led to a price collapse. Prices for other fruits remained stable.

Uzbekistan

Apricot prices continued to decline. Cherry prices increased, especially for larger calibers. Price ranges for strawberries narrowed. Initial price offerings for watermelons and early apples appeared. Tomato prices decreased. Prices for other vegetables remained stable.

Egypt

As grape trade intensified, supply increased, leading to price reductions. Egypt achieved remarkable growth in fresh and chilled tomato exports to Bahrain, strengthening its market position.

Technological Group Activity

The number of listings remained consistent with the previous week. Offerings for various fruit and vegetable packaging materials continued to grow. Listings for fertilizers and plant protection products increased. Sales of seedlings declined, with no saplings offered. Listings included shading nets, greenhouse films, tunnel films, pre-sale vegetable preparation equipment, and greenhouse heating equipment. Promotion of plant protection application services using agricultural drones continued.
