Watermelon and melon prices plunge as cucumber, pepper and eggplant supply expands

Watermelon and melon prices fell sharply in Ukraine during week 30 of 2026, while regional trade in cucumbers, sweet peppers and eggplants continued to expand. Carrots unexpectedly became the most actively offered vegetable, according to the latest analysis of the EastFruit Trade Platform.

The weekly data provide producers, wholesalers, exporters and buyers with an early indication of how seasonal supply, demand and prices are changing across the region.

Key market signals

  • Carrot offers doubled, making the crop the leader of the vegetable segment
  • Cucumber and sweet pepper supply continued to increase
  • The number of eggplant sellers tripled
  • Watermelon remained the most actively offered product on the platform
  • Melon supply doubled
  • Nectarine trade expanded
  • Sweet cherries dropped out of the top-selling products
  • Most vegetable prices increased in Ukraine
  • Watermelon and melon prices in Ukraine fell by around 50%
  • Melon prices started declining in Uzbekistan

Trading activity reaches a new 2026 high

The number of sale and purchase advertisements published in the EastFruit Trade Platform group reached another record for 2026.

At the same time, the geographical concentration of trading activity increased. Participants from Ukraine, Türkiye and Iran posted more offers, while product availability from Uzbekistan, Egypt and Moldova declined.

Companies and traders from nine countries used the platform during the reporting week.

The five most active countries were: Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Iran, Türkiye, Poland

The results demonstrate how quickly the EastFruit trading community reflects changes in harvesting seasons, market availability and commercial interest across Eastern Europe, Central Asia and neighbouring markets.

Carrots take the lead as eggplant supply triples

Carrots unexpectedly became the leading vegetable by number of sale offers. The number of advertisements doubled compared with the previous week.

Supply also increased for most vegetables traditionally included in the region’s “borscht set,” although white cabbage was an exception.

Cucumber and sweet pepper availability continued to grow. The number of eggplant sellers tripled, bringing eggplant into the list of the most frequently offered vegetables.

Tomato supply declined, while sweet corn dropped out of the weekly ranking of the most actively offered products.

Despite this, sweet corn remained the product most frequently requested by buyers. Demand was also visible for fruit and berries intended for freezing and industrial processing.

Watermelon dominates regional trade

Watermelon remained the undisputed leader of the EastFruit Trade Platform by number of sale advertisements.

The watermelon harvest has also started in Ukraine’s Kherson region, once the country’s leading production area for melons and watermelons. The region’s fruit and vegetable sector, however, has been severely damaged by the war.

The number of melon sellers doubled during the week as harvesting expanded across producing countries.

Sweet cherries disappeared from the list of frequently traded products as their season approached its end. Apricots and peaches were offered less frequently, while nectarine supply increased.

Moldova, meanwhile, expects a strong harvest of peaches and apricots this season, which could influence regional prices and export competition in the coming weeks.

Vegetable prices rise in Ukraine

Most vegetable prices increased in Ukraine during the reporting week.

Potatoes, carrots and onions became more expensive, while the price ranges for white cabbage and beetroot narrowed.

Tomato prices continued to rise, and cucumbers also became more expensive. Sweet pepper prices declined as supply increased.

Chinese cabbage, zucchini, garlic and fresh herbs became more expensive. Prices declined for cauliflower and eggplant.

The combination of expanding supply and lower eggplant prices may create additional opportunities for wholesale buyers, processors and retail chains.

Watermelon and melon prices fall by half

The most significant price movement was recorded in the watermelon and melon segment, where prices fell by approximately 50% compared with the previous week.

Blueberry prices continued to decline, and wild blueberries also became cheaper.

Raspberry prices, however, started to rise.

Apricots and plums were sold at lower prices, while sweet cherries, sour cherries and peaches became more expensive.

In the imported fruit segment, orange prices increased, while lemons became cheaper.

Melon prices decline in Uzbekistan

Melon prices also started falling in Uzbekistan as seasonal supply increased.

Prices for dark grape varieties moved higher.

At the same time, new vineyards planted with the Avatar grape variety are expected to be established in Uzbekistan’s Andijan region.

Packaging remains the leading technology category

Activity in the EastFruit Fruittechnology group remained stable compared with the previous week.

Packaging and containers for fruit and vegetable products continued to dominate technology-related offers. Fertiliser advertisements increased, while no offers for seedlings or planting material were recorded.

Products offered during the week included:

  • shading nets
  • insect-proof nets
  • greenhouse films
  • drip irrigation tapes
  • self-adhesive labels
  • fruit and vegetable packaging

The data show that packaging, crop protection materials and irrigation equipment remain among the most relevant operational needs for regional growers and exporters.

EastFruit Trade Platform allows fruit and vegetable companies to track supply, demand and price movements while communicating directly with producers, buyers, exporters and wholesalers from different countries.

The EastFruit Fruittechnology group connects growers with suppliers of packaging, equipment, irrigation systems, planting materials and other technologies required for commercial fruit and vegetable production.

For market participants, these communities provide more than individual advertisements. The weekly flow of offers helps identify:

  • products entering peak supply
  • categories facing downward price pressure
  • new purchasing demand
  • emerging export opportunities
  • technology and packaging requirements
  • changes in the geography of regional trade

Businesses can use the EastFruit groups to publish their own offers, search for suppliers and buyers, and follow market developments in real time.
