Shortage of high-quality onions drives the market upward as farmgate prices rise in Ukraine

For the first time since early February of the current year, Ukrainian producers have managed to increase selling prices for onions, analysts of the EastFruit project report. Overall, however, no significant price increases for this product had been recorded in Ukraine since mid-May 2025. Market players attribute the current price growth primarily to the seasonal depletion of onion stocks at domestic farms, as well as to increased purchasing activity from wholesale companies.

According to the project’s daily monitoring data, Ukrainian farmers are currently ready to ship onions at prices no lower than UAH 4–9 per kg ($0.09–0.20/kg), which is on average 40% higher than at the end of last working week.

Despite the price increase, demand for onions remains relatively high amid limited market supply, especially of high-quality produce. Most farms have already sold their available volumes, while those market participants who still hold certain stocks of good-quality onions expect prices in this segment to continue rising.

At the same time, despite the recent appreciation, onion prices in Ukraine are still on average 68% lower than in the same period last year. According to market participants, positive price trends in the onion segment are likely to persist until the mass supply of new-crop onions from domestic farms enters the market.

More detailed information on the development of the onion market and other fruit and vegetable segments in Ukraine is available on the EastFruit website.
