Moldova apple harvest of 2020 significantly lower than forecasts

Organisations of agricultural producers in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture of Moldova (MADRM) and local authorities analyzed operational data results for the harvesting campaigns of horticultural enterprises. Calculations showed that apple production in Moldova this year amounted to approximately 430,000 tons (plus or minus 20,000 tons). Back in beginning of this summer, experts from farmers and traders associations predicted that the 2020 harvest of apples in Moldova would be at least 530,000 tons. In October, however, the forecast was reduced to 500,000 tons after the harvesting in apple orchards crossed the halfway point for this season.

In 2019, according to the assessment of agricultural producers associations, the apple harvest in the Republic of Moldova was 595,000 tons (over 600,000 tons according to official statistics). At the end of 2020, data from the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova on apple production is likely to differ significantly from the expert estimates of non-governmental organizations.

Both the quantity and quality of apples for the 2020 harvest is lower than last year. However, in an effort to maximize the capacities of refrigerated warehouses, many horticultural enterprises are storing even small, “second quality category” apples for storage. As a result, according to expert estimates, at least 180,000 tons of apples still remain in the warehouses of farmers and traders at the end of November, and the bulk of these products are intended for export.
